Movement and play are part of everyday learning at Battery Park Montessori. Children build coordination, physical confidence, cooperation, and greater control of their bodies in our private outdoor space overlooking the Hudson River, our indoor movement room, and nearby neighborhood parks.

Movement and outdoor play are part of daily life at Battery Park Montessori. Children go outside rain or shine, barring severe weather. Each day, they use our private outdoor space overlooking the Hudson River and visit nearby parks and playgrounds to run, observe nature, and explore. This reflects the Montessori belief that children learn through movement, sensory experience, and direct contact with the world. The Bean, our indoor movement room, provides additional space for active play.

Young children need repeated opportunities to walk, run, climb, reach, push, pull, balance, and carry. Nursery schedules include gross motor or patio experiences, and teachers adapt movement opportunities to each group's developmental range. For a one-year-old, progress may mean moving securely across an uneven surface or carrying an object with two hands. A two-year-old may be learning to stop, change direction, climb with greater control, or participate in a simple movement game.

Older children bring growing coordination, stamina, and social awareness to outdoor movement and group play. They practice taking turns, negotiating roles, solving problems, and considering another person’s perspective.
