Our History

Battery Park Montessori was founded by Dr. Jennifer Jones in 2013 to give young children a purposeful first school experience grounded in Montessori education and enriched by English, Mandarin, and Spanish.

Where We Are Today

Battery Park Montessori serves children ages 1 through 5 in Nursery Ones, Nursery Twos, and a mixed-age Preschool and Kindergarten program known as Casa. The same core practices follow children as they grow: close observation by teachers, choice within a prepared environment, hands-on materials, care of self and the classroom, and daily engagement with English, Mandarin, and Spanish. Battery Park Montessori is part of Green Ivy International Schools and works in partnership with Pine Street School. Some graduates continue their education at Pine Street School's elementary and middle school, while the Exmissions program supports each family in exploring the public and independent schools that fit their child.

The Story Behind the Ivy

Look closely at our logo and you'll see leaves, not stars. They're ivy leaves, and the choice was deliberate. In the words of our founder:

"The leaves are tied to the idea of ivy, which I chose because of its qualities. Ivy climbs, is incredibly resilient, and stays evergreen despite the climate. Its leaves become diamond-shaped with maturity. The logo places the ivy in a circle to show unity, community, connection, and oneness. The different colors of the leaves represent diversity in every way: points of view, origins, heritage, and cultures. Green matters to me because I was introducing a private school in a climate of elitism, usually represented by institutional navy, burgundy, and gray. I wanted a color that stood for nature, growth, hope, prosperity, fresh perspectives, and rebirth.

That's the school in a single image. Resilience, community, diversity, and growth. It's who we've been since day one."

A Waterfront Home on the Hudson River

Battery Park Montessori’s home in Battery Park City looks out over the Hudson River. Beyond the school’s light-filled classrooms, lawns, trees, playgrounds, and public art give teachers many ways to extend learning outdoors. Since 2013, this waterfront setting has been part of how children experience school. Walks and outdoor time create space for movement, observation, conversation, and hands-on encounters with nature in every season.
